CASTING CALL: THE SEARCH FOR TOTO

The Goderich Little Theatre is seeking a dog to be Toto* in our upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz. We are looking for "stage-ready" pups who are calm, responsive, and comfortable being the center of attention!

*(or possibly two small, well-behaved dogs to share the role)

  • Submission Deadline: February 15th, 2026

  • How to Apply: Please email a photo of your dog with their name, approximate weight, and a brief summary of their temperament to jennifer.cousteils@gmail.com.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

While we aren't strictly looking for a Cairn Terrier (the original film breed), we are looking for a dog that fits the following criteria:

  • Size: Small lap dog (ideally under 18 lbs) so Dorothy can carry them comfortably.

  • Temperament: Must be friendly, non-aggressive, and unbothered by loud noises (music, thunder SFX), bright lights, and large crowds of children and adults. Unfazed by applause, music, or "Wicked Witches."

  • Skills:

    • Must be able to come when called by an actor.

    • Must be able to "sit" and "stay" reliably on a busy stage.

    • Ability to bark on command or sit in a basket is a major plus

  • Handling: Must be comfortable being picked up and carried by "strangers" (the actors).

  • Must have all updated vaccination's.

OWNER/HANDLER COMMITMENT

  • Attendance: One owner/handler must be present at all times during rehearsals and performances.

  • Schedule: Must be available for many rehearsals and all performances.

  • Offstage: Dogs must be able to stay quietly in a crate or on a leash in the wings when not on stage.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE AUDITION

Owners will be asked to demonstrate their dog’s personality and basic obedience. We may ask the dog to:

  1. Walk across the room on a leash through a group of people.

  2. Stay in a "sit" while the owner walks 10 feet away.

  3. Be picked up by one of our production team members.

  4. React (or rather, not react) to a sudden loud noise or a burst of music.

Note: We recommend bringing your dog’s favorite small treats to the audition to help them focus!
